The street belongs to people, all people, including pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders. Plug Park re-imagines an automobile parking space by providing shelter from the sun, a place to sit, and a place to plug in a laptop or phone. It activates the sidewalk as it transforms the street edge into an animated, populated, temporary public gathering space. Plug Park is forklifted into a city street parking space as it replaces pavement with pocket park. It serves as a roving center of horticultural and environmental awareness, as it draws attention to sustainable energy production and urban gardening. Plug Park is a partnership of public, private and non-profit entities. It was spearheaded and designed by Kim Salerno of Haven Designers and constructed by a team from the the City of Newport Public Services Department staff, led by Scott Wheeler.
